Eat Your Greens
Wednesday, December 8, 2010
In the lead-up to Christmas, it can start to feel like there's a year's worth of parties, dinners, drinks and lunches packed into a couple of bulging weeks. That's why it's more important than ever to eat your greens...
After all, asparagus is in season right now!
When I first saw that photo, I was convinced it was food styling taken to lovely, but unusual, extremes, and wondered just who would eat so much asparagus in one sitting (even for those parties, dinners and so forth...). But it's hiding a dark (very dark, chocolatey, even) secret...
It's a cake! Which I still find a little astonishing - it looks so very realistic, with the different shades of green, the markings on the stems, the huge amount of detail on the tips. When I think about the sorts of cakes that are just too perfect to eat, they tend towards the overly formal, rather than the purely astonishing. But seeing the interior, it's not just a beautiful cake but, very importantly, a tasty looking one, too.
No need to steam it with a poached egg and some parmesan - this asparagus would be wonderful served just by itself. You know vegetables are good for you...
